The Grenada Boys’ Secondary School (GBSS) was founded on February 02, 1885 in St. George’s with 17 male Students. The school was mainly located at the present Police Barracks on Melville Street. In 1946 the school was relocated to Tanteen to wooden Barracks which previously housed the Windward Island Battalion for World War II.
The GBSS has mainly been a boys’ school but girls have also attended especially for the sixth form (A’ level) years. Girls were actually admitted into form 1 from 1982 (during the Revolution) to 1987 but were phased out by 1991. The wooden barracks were completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The school also experienced severe destruction from two fires in April and June 2005. At present a new school is being constructed.
The school’s Auditorium was refurbished, through the kind sponsorship of DIGICEL, after Hurricane Ivan.
